After eight sold-out events in wine regions across the country, Grapes of Mirth has announced its first urban event with Grapes of Mirth Newcastle being held at the iconic and heritage-listed former Newcastle Railway Station in May. And, they’re taking the Hunter Valley with them!
The Station (est. 1858) is a significant component of the revitalising Newcastle program and will now host over 7 hours of comedy and wine, with six of the country's best headline comedians on Saturday, May 11. Joining Grapes of Mirth host and founder, Merrick Watts, will be Nazeem Hussain (Orange is the New Brown; 2017 I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!), Denise Scott (co-host, Studio 10), ‘Chopper’ - aka Heath Franklin, world improv champion Rebecca De Unamuno, Luke McGregor (Rosehaven, Utopia), and the winner of the top award at both the 2015 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and 2015 Edinburgh Fringe, Sam Simmons.
Grapes of Mirth will also bring the Hunter Valley to Newcastle for the day, with six handpicked Hunter Valley wine producers popping up at The Station as part of the event. Wineries pouring on the day include Glandore Estate, De Iuliis, Thomas Wines, First Creek Wines, Hart & Hunter and Peter Drayton Wines. There will also be locally produced beer and cider, plenty of gourmet grub, and tunes from resident Grapes of Mirth DJ, DJ Pedro Moshman.
Bringing comedy, wine and people together around Australia has become Grapes of Mirth’s standard stock and trade over the past two years. Since its inaugural event in February 2017, Grapes of Mirth’s ability to match wine with comedy has proved its overwhelming success, selling out events in SA’s McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, and the Coonawarra, as well as Orange, NSW, Canberra, ACT, and Victoria’s King Valley. Founder Merrick Watts has championed this winning formula after recognising the value of an afternoon featuring Australia’s best comedians and some of our best wineries – an experience that has subsequently seen a steadily growing community of Grapes of Mirth devotees.
