Morpeth Chapel Jazz is an annual event held from June 17-19, in the iconic heritage town of Morpeth – just up the New England Highway from Wine Country. Each year exotic jazz talent from around the country gathers to share their sounds and stories over one extraordinary weekend as part of a joint venture of the three churches of Morpeth.
Until the 1980s, Morpeth was a rundown village in fear of demolition. Then it was slowly rejuvenated as a destination and what was left of its charming buildings rescued from the bulldozer. A few local businesses joined together to establish a small jazz festival in the bicentenary year of 1988. The jazz festival soon acquired a life of its own and by 2000 had developed into a major event. Unfortunately, by 2004 the event had become logistically unmanageable as a street festival and came to a grinding halt.
In 2009 Jazz returned to Morpeth when the Catholic, Anglican and Uniting churches of Morpeth got together to revive the Morpeth Jazz Festival as Chapel Jazz. Chapel Jazz aims to present traditional jazz in a welcoming environment to jazz lovers and their families and provide an enjoyable community experience.
