Community Street Tree Planting Program Opens

As part of the Community Street Tree Planting Program, Council is calling for expressions of interests (EOI) from residents who wish to have a street tree planted on Council land in front of their property..

The program will see residents take ownership of the tree by watering and caring for the tree during the establishment stage.

Council's Operation Manager Recreation Works Caine James says, 'due to the non destructive digging and service checks required for each tree planted on the street, it is a significant commitment of resources.

By partnering with residents to help with watering, we are hoping to give the trees the best chance of surviving the hot months.

Council will supply successful recipients with a care pack, including a 500ml concentrate of Harvest Organic liquid fertiliser and information sheet to help with the tree establishment.

Manager Environment & Sustainability Catherine Pepper says "we know that the community want more trees to contribute to local character, amenity and provide more urban cooling. 'We're hoping this is a great start to get the community engaged in the process of planting more trees in our streets that will contribute to our broader green spaces.

"Once the EOIs are collected, Council's arborists will assess the location of the requested site to determine if it is suitable and the best species to be planted. Not all EOIs are guaranteed a tree. Successful applicants will be dependant on the suitability after the assessment and the availability of trees."

For those not successful in this round of plantings will automatically be included in the evaluation for the next round of plantings.

EOIs close on 9 October 2020, for more information and to submit for the program visit www.maitland.nsw.gov.au/street-tree-planting-program
