The Most Awarded Boutique Semillon Producer in Australia
Once considered the world’s most widely planted variety, Semillon has found its home in the Hunter Valley where with age it develops into a multi-dimensional white wine of fascinating and unique complexity, smoothness and depth.
While there is seemingly no end to the number of producers who have a long and proud tradition of producing exceptionally high-quality Hunter Valley Semillon, McLeish Estate deserves a special mention. Having won over 35 Trophies, 55 Gold and a total of 124 Awards, McLeish Estate can comfortably claim to be the most awarded boutique Semillon producer in Australia.
This boutique Hunter Valley winery has been successfully producing premium wines from their 16-hectare property on DeBeyer’s Road in Pokolbin for the past 34 years where owners Robert (Bob) and Maryanne McLeish along with their daughter Jessica, who now heads up the operations, oversee all aspects of the family business.
With Andrew Thomas as their winemaker, McLeish Estate is widely recognised for producing an amazing range of award-winning single vineyard Semillon's that are celebrated throughout the world.
The much-decorated McLeish 2007 Cellar Reserve Semillon was awarded the World’s Best Semillon at the 2012 and 2013 London International Wine Challenge and took home three trophies at the 2013 Sydney International Wine Competition. The 2007 Semillon then went on to receive four trophies at the Sydney Royal Wine Show, as well as trophies at the Sydney International Wine Competition and the 2014 Australian Boutique Wine Awards. A true champion wine of the world, the Cellar Reserve Semillon 2007 continued to excel on the world stage by being awarded an unprecedented three trophies at the 2016 London International Wine Challenge – considered to be the world’s most rigorous, impartial and influential wine contest.
Since then, McLeish Estate has time and again proved that the 2007 Semillon is no 'one-off' success story.
The McLeish Estate 2009 Cellar Reserve Semillon, bears a strong resemblance to its 2007 counterpart and won Gold at the recently held 2019 International Wine Challenge in London. For those with a fondness for Semillon and are looking to stock up the cellar – perhaps now is the time to capitalise on the relatively early successes of the 2009 Semillon which is priced at $125 a bottle and which by all accounts seems to be following the same path as the 2007 Semillon which is now priced at $220 a bottle. More recent Semillons such as the 2013 and 2014 vintages are also showing great promise.
