A long time ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the Hunter Valley was a land of volcanoes and untamed wilderness. Every Easter school holidays Hunter Valley Gardens brings that ancient world back to life with its annual Mega Creatures event. Explorers, both young and old, can wander the Gardens, discovering towering dinosaurs, giant insects, and this year, for the first time, mythical dragons, shimmering unicorns, and legendary beasts that step straight out of storybooks.

In 2026, Mega Creatures takes its adventure to a whole new level. Alongside the returning Jurassic favourites, visitors can explore the brand-new Land of Legends, where ten-metre-high dragons guard crumbling castle ruins, unicorns shimmer beneath the trees, and other mythical creatures bring folklore to life. It’s an imaginative expansion that adds fresh excitement for returning families while keeping all the prehistoric roar, wonder and hands-on fun that has made the event a school holiday tradition.

At the heart of the evolution is a dramatically enhanced Land of Legends precinct. Perched above the Sunken Garden Waterfall, majestic dragons now loom atop castle ruins, creating a theatrical centrepiece that feels straight from the pages of a storybook. Nearby, Unicorn Meadow offers a gentler kind of magic, with graceful unicorns surrounded by whimsical toadstools inviting children - and plenty of grown-ups - to pause, sit and soak up the enchantment.

Julie Pettit, Marketing Manager at Hunter Valley Gardens, says the team has worked hard to ensure 2026 delivers a genuine “wow-factor” for returning visitors.

“Mega Creatures has become a signature autumn-time event for the Hunter region,” she says.

“In 2026, we’ve expanded our fantasy zones and creature installations to deliver even more visual impact and immersive storytelling. The combination of large-scale animatronics, themed areas and our Night Safari experience makes it visually breathtaking and highly engaging for visitors of all ages.”

For families who have made Mega Creatures an annual tradition, that sense of renewal is key. Each year the displays are reimagined and reconfigured, and 2026 introduces new themed zones including Dragon Den, Dragon Floresta, Carnivore Concourse and Herbivore Hectares - each offering its own atmosphere and carefully curated creatures. Of course, the dinosaurs remain the undeniable stars of the show.

Towering over pathways and lawns, the animatronic giants transport visitors back millions of years. Carnivores and herbivores are thoughtfully grouped, encouraging curious minds to compare claws, teeth and tails while wandering through the garden landscapes. The ever-popular giant insects also return, delighting and horrifying in equal measure. Spiders cling to structures, beetles gleam in the sunshine, and oversized creepy crawlies create perfect selfie moments for brave explorers.

While the animatronics command attention, the atmosphere extends well beyond the displays. Daily from 9am to 4pm (last entry 3pm), the Day Session allows visitors to explore the full breadth of the Gardens, with amusement rides operating from 10am to 3.30pm. The vintage Venetian Carousel adds a touch of nostalgia, while the Tea Cups deliver dizzying giggles. The Swing Chair lifts riders 11 metres into the air, offering sweeping views across dragons and dinosaurs alike. For those seeking a little more adrenaline, the towering Superslide promises fast-paced fun, and the Ferris Wheel provides a panoramic vantage point over the fantasy-filled landscape.

Beyond the rides and roaming giants, Mega Creatures 2026 invites children to step directly into the adventure.

Young explorers can roll up their sleeves at Dinosaur Diggings, a hands-on fossil experience set near the Brumbies and Frog Ponds. Guided by the resident Mega Creatures Explorer, children dig for real fossils, transforming curiosity into genuine discovery and giving budding palaeontologists a thrill that feels wonderfully authentic.

In the Brumbies and Border Garden, the Bug Hunt Adventure turns the Gardens into a riddle-filled quest. Armed with a stamp sheet collected at entry, families solve clues and collect stamps as they explore - a simple but effective way to encourage wandering eyes and inquisitive minds.

On Saturdays, Magical Unicorn Meetings offer a serene, storybook encounter in the Sunken Garden, where families can meet a graceful unicorn up close and capture a photo to treasure. Nearby during the day session, Fairy Face Painting adds sparkle and colour, transforming children into fantastical creatures.

For those drawn to medieval adventure, Dragon’s Quest brings live-action storytelling into the Formal Garden. Families gather as a brave knight faces a fearsome flight of dragons in a theatrical battle of courage and legend.

Even the smallest details hold surprises. The Daily Creature Egg Hunt challenges visitors to locate a missing oversized egg hidden somewhere in the Gardens - returning it to “Mumma” at Garden Entry for the chance to win a family pass to the Spring School Holidays event.

Potion Play with the Wizard, set within the Amphitheatre, invites children into a bubbling world of colourful brews, smoky mixtures and interactive fantasy fun.

It’s this layering of experiences - visual spectacle, interactive wandering, hands-on activities, entertainments and classic carnivalstyle rides that encourages families to linger. Pettit says planning ahead can make all the difference.

“We always encourage visitors to allow plenty of time,” she explains. “There is so much to see and do, from exploring each themed zone to enjoying the rides and taking photos. Arriving early in your session ensures you can truly immerse yourself in the experience.”

If the daytime experience is enchanting, the after-dark transformation is nothing short of spellbinding.

On select evenings (28–29 March, 3–19 April and 24–26 April), Mega Creatures Night Safari invites guests to return from 5pm to 9.30pm and see the Gardens in an entirely new light. Illuminated pathways lead into a dramatic twilight world where dinosaurs loom more ominously, dragons glow against the night sky, and unicorns shimmer beneath carefully crafted lighting effects.

The scale feels heightened in the dark. Shadows lengthen, sound carries differently, and the atmosphere becomes immersive in a way that’s both thrilling and magical. It’s easy to see why the Night Safari has become a favourite for families with older children, couples looking for a unique date night, and keen photographers chasing striking imagery.

With illuminated creature displays and a rich fantasy ambience, the Night Safari delivers a distinctly different experience from the daytime visit, and many families opt for combination tickets to enjoy both.

And of course, Easter has always been a highlight at Hunter Valley Gardens, but 2026 introduces an entirely new element: Hoppity Hollow. Running across the Easter long weekend from Friday 3 April to Monday 6 April, this specially designed zone brings a festive twist to the Mega Creatures adventure. Children who pre-purchase a $2 hunt ticket can participate in the Hoppity Hollow Hunt between 9.30am and 3pm, searching for nominated eggs marked with the numbers one, two and three. Once all three are found, they can present them to staff at the end of the trail and claim their Easter chocolate reward.

“We changed the egg hunt this year to ensure that it was a more inclusive, a less hectic and overwhelming experience,” said Petit. “Some children with diverse needs found the experience last year to be too crowded, so we’ve made sure to accommodate that this year. It’s a charming, structured experience that adds an extra layer of excitement.”

The Easter Bunny will also make special guest appearances outside Hoppity Hollow across the long weekend, providing plenty of photo opportunities. Best times are 10.30am, 12.15pm and 1.15pm, but check your program to be sure.

A fun day or night out can make you hungry, and with so many food options available, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Garden Terrace Café is open from 9.30am to 3.30pm daily serving a seasonal menu, the Hunter Valley Gardens Trailer, open day and night will serve up kids meals, nuggets, chips, burgers and healthy options, you can’t go past the Gelato Bros woodfired pizzas and dessert menus, the German Grill Haus has perennial favourites – kransky, pretzels, and hotdogs, you’ll also find vendors selling slushies and dumplings and loads more - so you won’t go hungry!

Located just one hour from Newcastle and two hours from Sydney, Hunter Valley Gardens continues to position Mega Creatures as both a day trip and an overnight escape. Accommodation packages in partnership with Mercure Hunter Valley Gardens and Harrigan’s Hunter Valley encourage visitors to extend their stay, supporting the broader tourism economy.

For many families, Mega Creatures has become part of an annual holiday ritual much like Snow Time in the Garden and the Christmas Lights Spectacular later in the year. The scale of the production, spread across 14 hectares of landscaped gardens, ensures there’s always something new to discover.

“Mega Creatures continues to grow each year,” Pettit says. “We see families returning annually, children who first visited as toddlers now bringing younger siblings along. Creating those shared memories in such a visually spectacular environment is incredibly special for us as a team.”

In 2026, Mega Creatures isn’t simply returning - it’s evolving. Expanded zones, new installations, a reimagined Easter activation and the ever-popular Night Safari ensure that even seasoned visitors will find fresh surprises around every bend.

As the gates open once more and the first delighted gasps echo through the Gardens, one thing is certain: in this corner of the Hunter, legends truly come to life.
