Local hospitality businesses will find it easier to set up outdoor dining, with Maitland City Council rolling out its new Outdoor Dining Policy.
The policy introduces a streamlined permit system through MyCouncil, reducing red tape and speeding up approvals while keeping public spaces safe and accessible. It follows the discontinuation of Service NSW's state-led Outdoor Dining Trial and Program.
As an introductory incentive, Council will waive the one-off $145 application fee for the next six months.
Mayor Philip Penfold said the policy supports businesses in expanding their footprint and catering to more customers.
"Outdoor dining adds life to our streets and gives the community more opportunities to enjoy our cafes, restaurants and bars," Mayor Penfold said.
Director City Planning Trevor Ryan said the policy aligns with NSW Government Vibrancy Reforms and provides a clear framework for businesses.
"This approach supports local hospitality and will help create more vibrant and liveable precincts across Maitland," Mr Ryan said.
The policy outlines requirements for public liability insurance, pedestrian access, and liquor licensing where relevant, and forms part of Maitland's broader Economic Development Strategy.
