Maitland’s Australia Day Celebrations Are Happening In A Suburb Near You

This year, Maitland City Council’s Australia Day celebrations are happening across the city with the Maitland Big Australia Day Breakfasts, the Australia Day Official Ceremony, free pool entry at Maitland’s Aquatic Centres, Tiger Moth Flyovers and the Summer Lights project in Central Maitland.

Maitland Big Australia Day Breakfasts are hosted by some of the local Lions and Rotary clubs and will be located at RH Taylor Reserve in Lorn, Whitewater Adventure Park in Chisholm, Chelmsford Oval in Metford and Hartcher Field in Telarah. The community are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and camping chairs to enjoy a free BBQ breakfast, amusements, lawn games and live music from 7.30am to 12.00pm.

At 10.00am, residents should keep their eyes peeled to the sky to see vintage Tiger Moths flying all over Maitland.

The Australia Day Official Ceremony will include a Citizenship Ceremony for 28 new citizens and the presentation of the Young Citizen and Citizen of the Year Awards. Attendance to the ceremony will be by invitation only, but the proceedings will be live streamed from 10.00am and can be viewed through Council’s website and Facebook page.

There will also be free pool entry from 10.00am to 4.00pm at both Maitland and East Maitland Aquatic Centres where the splash pad and inflatables will be available. From sunset to 11.00pm, iconic Central Maitland buildings, The Maitland Post Office, The Riverlink and 437 High Street (previously known as Taylors of Maitland), will be transformed with vibrant lighting projections.

Council’s Team Leader Events Kara Stonestreet says ‘Australia Day is one of the most exciting events on Council’s calendar for the community. This year, there are so many activities spread across the city there really is something for everyone to enjoy.’

A comprehensive COVID-19 Safety Plan will be in place for all Council run events and activities.

Council will continue to monitor and adhere to the advice from the Federal and State Governments, including any variation or modification of the public health orders.
